SITUATION:

Grid Energy contracted BOND to develop a schematic design and validation study for a phased approach to conceptualize, design and construct a combined heat & power (CHP) project at the Georgetown University Central Utility Plant. This initial phase of the project validated the project size, performance and preliminary budget for an 8MW CHP at Georgetown University (GU) located inside an existing section of the plant that was formerly a clean coal technology demonstration facility.

CHALLENGES:

  • All equipment contained within an existing facility formerly used in a clean coal technology demonstration project
  • Electrical distribution system with six incoming feeders from PEPCO created a unique interconnection issue
  • No available laydown space for staging

SOLUTIONS:

  • Utilized BOND’s Reality Capture Team to self-perform LIDAR based terrestrial laser scanning which allowed team to recreate sections of the plant with ¼” accuracy
  • Medium voltage switchgear developed that created a ring bus configuration to allow flexible operation within the multiple incoming feeders
  • Detailed logistics plans created to minimize site impacts and to coordinate with the academic schedule

RESULTS:

  • This project supports projected growth in steam demand
  • Reduced greenhouse gas emissions
  • Enhanced resiliency at the central plant and for other critical loads within six to eight years
