CASE STUDY:

Harvard School of Public Health: Condition Assessment

Facts:
Size: 540,000 sf
Date: July 2003

Description:
BOND was engaged to complete a condition assessment and retro-commissioning project for the Harvard School of Public Health’s 540,000 sf campus in and around the Longwood Medical Area in Boston.

Challenge/Situation:
HSPH was scheduled to move from its current location to a new facility in 5-7 years. As a result, there was a need to identify critical short term improvement projects to help sustain tenant service levels and facility operations for the remaining time on site.

Solution/Action:
The team developed the following classifications to help prioritize the work; facility condition index (FCI), reliability of essential systems and energy saving opportunities. The BOND team then developed schematic designs and construction estimates to assist HSPH with capital budget planning and implementation.

Benefit/Result:
The final report provided a condition and performance appraisal for critical assets utilizing best practice models used for project prioritization, accurate construction pricing and implementation cost savings from efficient project bundling. In addition, local utility rebate funding was identified for use on several projects.
