CASE STUDY:
Brown University: Utility Upgrade
Facts:
Type: Campus
Date: Completed 2009
Description:
An extensive four year, campus-wide underground utility infrastructure program added capacity and access to water, electricity, and heat, and supported a major campus expansion at one of the most historic campuses in the United States. Our team managed replacement of the high-temperature water system, installation of a regional chiller to increase cold water capacity, completion of upgrades to the electrical system and the central heating plant, and replacement of all electrical feeders.
Challenge/Situation:
The scope of the project was so encompassing, and the campus so active, that minimizing impact to the existing systems required careful scheduling of shutdowns, crew production, and logistics.
Solution/Action:
Crews worked year round, completing piping work during summer months when the heating system was inactive.
Benefit/Result:
The project was accomplished without disruption to existing systems or student/public culture through management of specific work areas and scopes.
