Tishman Construction: Underground Shafts at 165 Tremont Street

Description:
BOND provided special construction services to support construction of this luxury rise renovation overlooking Boston Common. Underground concrete ventilation shafts for the MBTA’s Red Line needed to be reconstructed before the finished granite sidewalks could be installed.
Two 25-foot deep structural shafts within the sidewalk were demolished and rebuilt to a larger size using cast-in-place concrete. Finish work included granite pavers, polished granite aprons, tree grating, and street lighting. Exhaust and intake fans within the shafts remained operational throughout the project in order to provide air to inbound/outbound transit tunnels.
Challenge/Situation:
Working with energized exhaust fans required careful coordination with MBTA officials, quality control to protect against contaminates entering the ventilation system, and an attention to safety while working near the operating fans.
Solution/Action:
We undertook extensive safety meetings with attention focused on “lock out/tag out” procedures and protocols.
Benefit/Result:
Access to the apartment building, including fire egress, was maintained throughout the project
