Description:
21-mile underground high voltage electrical transmission project was designed to increase reliability of the Southwestern Connecticut grid system. BOND performed the underground portion of the project encountering very diverse environments such as highways, bridges, wetlands, and densely populated urban areas. The work required both day and night shifts to complete the work on schedule and minimize disruption to traffic. BOND’s ability to work on all types of underground utilities provided the owner the ability to relocate obstructing systems in an efficient and timely manner.

Challenge/Situation:
Coordination of trenching operations through various sensitive environments was a challenge. Many areas required dewatering; also, vehicular and pedestrian safety were key elements to address.

Solution/Action:
Pre-planning, route exploration, constructability mitigation assesments, and assembling the right team was critical in delivering the project. Our field teams were briefed daily on the construction plan and schedule.

Benefit/Result:
A successful and well delivered project was delivered to Northeast Utilities with minimal changes, because collaborative planning among owner, engineer, and contractor was the major focus.
