CASE STUDY:
NSTAR: Memorial Drive 115kV Electrical Duct Bank
Facts:
Type: Electrical Duct Bank
Date: Completed: 2003
Description:
BOND installed 15,000 lineal feet of electrical distribution duct bank along Memorial Drive in Cambridge, MA adjacent to a scenic and heavily traveled stretch along the Charles River. The full lane roadway project had to be completed on a 16-week fast track schedule to coincide with the seasonal traffic lull. Preconstruction planning with public agencies and NStar was the key to delivering this project on time and on budget.
The depth of our experience allowed us to manage complex issues such as public safety, multiple street crossings, existing utility support and relocation, high speed vehicular traffic, and bridge structure modifications. Harvard, MIT, and Boston University maintain boathouses along the river’s edge of this pedestrian populated thoroughfare.
Challenge/Situation:
Although the trench work was very typical for BOND crews, site conditions due to the location along the river’s edge posed the greatest challenge.
Solution/Action:
Our crews made an exceptional effort towards safety because the work zone is used by many for running, biking, and other recreational activities.
Benefit/Result:
The new electrical line increases power reliability to Cambridge NSTAR customers.
