MWRA: Metrowest Water Supply Tunnel

Description:
BOND constructed a series of subsurface concrete structures along the new MWRA Metrowest Water Supply Tunnel route in Framingham and Weston, MA. Our scope of work involved mass excavation, earth support, concrete construction, and installation of mechanical piping. Several below-grade concrete structures cap off 300 foot deep riser shafts. 36-inch diameter pipe were set horizontally to street mains; instrumentation buildings were installed atop 10 foot diameter pipe shafts.
Challenge/Situation:
The project was executed in multiple locations, including residential neighborhoods; work was conducted concurrently with tunnel construction below.
Solution/Action:
Intense pre-planning with the engineer, subcontractors and construction manager resulted in development of a concise plan to complete the work with multiple crews.
Benefit/Result:
The tunnel structures were ready for tie in at the pre-established schedule milestones.
