Work
CASE STUDY:
Harvard University: Northwest Science Center
Facts:
Size: 510,000 sf
Date: Completed 2008
Description:
State-of-the-art multi-disciplinary research center is partially located above a new underground garage, the building is constructed equally below and above ground; research and museum spaces share underground with a chilled water plant and electrical substation. Upper four stories serve laboratories, lecture halls and support a cross section of research and teaching.
Challenge/Situation:
The program exceeded available space on a highly congested area adjacent to a new below-grade parking garage, surrounded by active and highly sensitive research, teaching and student life environments.
Solution/Action:
Prior construction all utilities were relocated and improved. Upon completion of enabling work, an ‘up-down’ approach was employed to compress schedule and provide a staging area for construction of the energy plants and research spaces.
Benefit/Result:
The entire project was completed by September 2008, serving not only the science center’s program but also providing a new central energy plant to support campus growth needs.
