MIT: Media Lab

CASE STUDY:

MIT: Media Lab

Facts:
Size: 163,000 sf
Date: Completed 2009

Description:
The project contains laboratories, classrooms, exhibit space and offices for the MIT Media Lab and its Art and Architecture department. The 163,000 SF addition was designed by Fumihiko Maki, a Japanese Pritzker Prize winner. The project’s precision-based unique design is striking; moreover, it required an exceptional level of coordination and collaboration.

Challenge/Situation:
Extremely precise tolerances presented challenges unlike most any other project. Application and intersections of materials needed the highest level of quality control to provide the right level of ‘fit and finish’.

Solution/Action:
BOND engaged high quality subcontractors who understood the specific and precise architectural requirements. Mock-ups were rigorously developed and monitored to strict tolerances; this was accomplished by collaboration of the entire team.

Benefit/Result:
As a result of proactive collaboration and cooperation among the entire team, MIT now has a veritable “jewel box” housing the latest in design teaching in the 21st century.
