Work
CASE STUDY:
Harvard University: Children’s Center
Facts:
Size: 1600 SF
Date: Summer 2008
Description:
At the Harvard Business School two existing apartment units were converted to an overflow day care center. Work included new MEP systems, extensive millwork and age-appropriate finishes throughout the space. BOND also assisted HBS and its vendor in construction of a new exterior play area.
Challenge/Situation:
The project had to be completed during the summer right after commencement and be ready for opening in September for occupancy and use. We had to be substantially complete mid- August to allow for certification and owner’s work to be undertaken post-construction. Since the center is in an active graduate residence apartment building, noise control was critical; also, overtime was not an option, despite the compressed schedule.
Solution/Action:
We tightly coordinated schedules with the subcontractors and planned everyone’s work closely with HBS. In investigating lead times, we had to search for products that fit within the timeline and recommend alternate products or quick ship options. We worked with the design team and HBS in a collaborative manner to make timely decisions on changes.
Benefit/Result:
The project was completed on time and under budget for HBS. Neither design nor quality were compromised on any of the changes that had to be made as a result of lead time issues. Harvard Business School now has an attractive and nurturing facility that serves the children of the HBS community.
