North Easton, Mass., – Stonehill College celebrated the groundbreaking of the new Leo J. Meehan School of Business, designed by The S/L/A/M Collaborative (SLAM) and constructed by BOND. The ceremony was attended by members of the College, academic administrators, trustees, students, faculty and the project team.
The new $30 million Leo J. Meehan School of Business will offer 65,000 square feet of cutting-edge technology, adaptive classrooms and collaboration spaces. The building’s Georgian architecture is designed to reflect the true spirit of the Stonehill community and campus, while the interior is designed to encourage innovation and advanced business environments. Completed by fall 2019, it features innovative Bloomberg rooms, simulated trading rooms and advanced business innovation studios with maker spaces. The School will expand the curriculum and encompass the accounting, finance, international business, management, marketing, economics and healthcare administration programs.

Athletic and Fitness Center at the Sally Blair Ames Sports Complex. SLAM also designed the latest Campus Master Plan, the new Residence Hall and Campus Foot Bridge.

(Boston, MA) – BOND, the Northeast’s premier building, civil, utility and energy construction firm celebrated the Topping Off of the new Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital–Needham (BID–Needham) Outpatient Clinical Center. The ceremony marked the last steel beam raised on this 37,000 square foot facility. It was attended by members of the BID–Needham community, administrators and staff as well as the BOND project team and design partners including JACA Architects, Bard Rao + Athanas, Souza True & Partners and Nitsch Engineering.
BOND is providing preconstruction and construction management services for the 37,000 SF, four-story building, located at 148 Chestnut Street, Needham, Mass. The Center will provide gastroenterology, cardiology and orthopedic services, as well as an array of medical/surgical specialties and support services. The Center will support an increased number of medical professionals with technology-rich services designed to lower hospital stays and improve the patient experience.
“We are excited to celebrate this important construction milestone,” said Michael Walsh, BOND’s Vice President, Healthcare and Life Sciences. “This is a transformative building for the Needham community, providing world-class medical care and outpatient services closer to home. The new Outpatient Clinical Center is planned to open in the Spring of 2019 and is the third project delivered by BOND and JACA Architects within the last ten years. Other recent BOND/JACA projects on the BID–Needham campus include the Cancer Center and Surgical Building in 2014 and the BreastCare Center in 2016. These projects are part of the Hospital’s overall strategy to redevelop and transform the Needham campus, bringing state-of-the art care to Boston’s western suburbs.

(Boston, MA) – BOND, the Northeast’s premier building, civil, utility and energy construction firm announces it has received a Construction Management Association of America, New England Chapter (CMAA) Project Achievement Award for the Boston University Joan and Edgar Booth Theatre and Production Center. The project won in the New Construction category at the 24th Annual Awards Ceremony held on May 9, 2018 at the Omni Parker House, Boston.
Within an aggressive fast-track 15-month design and construction schedule, BOND delivered a beautiful multi-functional theatre complex, with innovative spaces and design labs for teaching and producing student theater. Working closely with University stakeholders and design firm Elkus Manfredi Architects, BOND developed a customized project delivery plan that aligned design and budget. Methodologies included Lean Management strategies, a two-phased occupancy approach, off-site prefabrication and early team work to resolve constructability issues and materials selection.
“I was impressed with the dedication and thoughtful approach that went into this challenging project,” said David Flynn, Assistant Vice President of Facilities Management, Boston University. “Through BOND’s preconstruction process and efforts, the project team helped us evaluate all the options and find creative ways to meet our priorities. The team worked diligently, when it became apparent that the original schedule expectations could not be achieved, to come up with an approach to ensure the Theatre and Production Center had a phased in project delivery schedule.”
Creating a solid teaching ground for the College of Fine Arts aspiring theater professionals, the 4-story, 75,000 SF complex is uniquely designed, with an outward slanted glass front façade. The new complex includes a 250-seat black-box theatre, high bay spaces for scenery and prop construction, costume shops, graduate and student studios and faculty offices. A 65,000 SF two-level subsurface parking garage and adjoining parking lot provides space for 290 vehicles with a landscaped plaza. The new building is located at 820 Commonwealth Avenue in Boston.

(Boston, MA) – BOND, the Northeast’s premier building, civil, utility and energy construction firm, recently celebrated the grand opening of the College of the Holy Cross’ Hart Center at the Luth Athletic Complex in Worcester, Massachusetts. The official dedication and ribbon cutting ceremony took place on Saturday, April 28, 2018. It was attended by members of the College, the BOND project team, faculty, students, alumni and benefactors.
BOND provided construction management services to deliver the $95 million athletic facility, putting the College in the same league as other Division 1 athletic programs. Working closely with design firm Sasaki Associates, BOND constructed a substantial, 138,000 square-foot renovation and a 143,000 square-foot addition to the existing Hart Center. The facility includes a 64,000 SF indoor practice facility with 100 yards of turf field, a 9,500 SF strength and conditioning center and a 3,000 SF space for sports medicine. It includes locker rooms, meeting rooms, offices and an exterior plaza to host events.
“We are especially proud of this building project and its pivotal role in accelerating the Athletics Program for the College,” said Frank Hayes, BOND’s Chief Operating Officer. “Student athletes now have access to a world-class facility that fosters excellence and creates a sense of pride throughout the Holy Cross Community.”

Tony Bond leads BOND’s Oil & Gas Group and oversees its growth and development. His dedication to creating a team culture focused on safety and quality is one of the reasons for the company’s success and its expansion throughout the Northeast.
In our work planning and constructing underground utility infrastructure, we often say that our best work is never seen. While most people picture construction as the typical residential or high-rise project, our group is focused on constructing utility infrastructure below ground and primarily out of site.
We don’t mind the invisibility though. What matters most is managing another unseen – the countless risks and often unpredictable scenarios encountered when building in densely-populated communities.
BOND’s work for utility clients takes us into the most challenging project sites and most dangerous subsurface complexities imaginable. The risk management lessons learned on hundreds of these projects offer insights for anyone responsible for safely planning and building a project of any type.
Ask the Right Questions, Find the Right Answers
In utility construction, we have learned to assume that much of the existing infrastructure and surrounding subsurface conditions are not accurately documented. Even when ‘as-built’ plans exist, the reality is much of the infrastructure in place is decades old. While all parties, from the utility companies to the engineers to local cities and towns, do their best to safely and appropriately document what is in the ground, there is simply no way to be 100% certain.
To overcome this unknown, our planning and due diligence work involves research and verification to understand the full picture of existing conditions. Once we gain a more complete picture, we can determine what issues might need to be addressed before we begin the work. Using a variety of methods including Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR), Utility Mark Outs, to traditional hand digging and other options, we identify the best opportunities to safely and productively ensure that the work we do is in the best interest of the client and the existing facilities.
Two-Way Learning in the Community
When Con Edison chose BOND to install a new high–pressure gas pipeline through the heart of the Bronx in New York City, the challenge went far beyond constructing over a mile of 16-inch pipeline. Our responsibility also included managing the risks inherent of building along and below urban streets and congested thoroughfares in one of the most densely-populated communities in the country.
To mitigate risk and create a custom plan, we needed to learn as much as possible about the routines and daily conditions in the Bronx neighborhood. We met with local property owners, residents and school administrators to talk about the scheduling of street-level construction and how to best reduce impacts. We also met with community groups, transit officials and elected officials.
By going beyond the expected methods of communicating, we not only built trust and mutual understanding in the community, we also gained valuable insight on how to tailor our safety measures to avoid the risks identified by those who live and work there every day.

A Safety Culture
Whether building in the Bronx or a small town in Rhode Island, our success relies on a company culture created around the right values. An engaged, experienced and accountable project team works together to establish a safety culture. Investing in training and equipment is part of this, but an even larger part is how our staff members see their role. In a culture based on the values of mutual trust and responsibility, every individual is comfortable learning from each other, teaching others and speaking up when necessary.
Something I learned early in my career is that the newest person on the team can sometimes have the best idea for solving a problem or identifying a potential problem. By sharing information and encouraging an open, transparent organization, everyone is part of the responsibility – and the success.
Safety First is a constant mindset when the job site shares a busy street in the Bronx with pedestrians and motorists. To manage the multiple risks, BOND uses its “Focus on Today” protocols that include daily interactive meetings, everyday inspections and constant communications on safety vigilance. Tony joins Mike Walsh, Vice President Healthcare as part of BOND’s Healthcare Leadership team. Tony will focus on project delivery and process optimization. He will draw from over 25 years’ industry experience to oversee the operational efficiency of the group utilizing a collaborative Lean philosophy as the company continues to expand its service offerings within this market.
Prior to joining BOND, Tony was Vice President of Construction for Mill Creek Residential Trust, LLC in Boston. He served as Vice President of Healthcare for Suffolk Construction as well as Senior Project Manager at William A. Berry & Son, Inc. His project portfolio includes clients such as Boston Children’s Hospital, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Baystate Medical Center, Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Joslin Diabetes Center, Lahey Hospital & Medical Center and the Elliot Health System. Tony is a strong advocate for giving back and making an impact to the community he serves, whether that’s a client project, local need, or non-profit organization.

As part of the March celebration of Women’s History Month and #WICWeek2018, the BOND Foundation established a new scholarship program for women students at Wentworth Institute of Technology (WIT) and the University of Massachusetts Lowell.
Ten scholarships will be awarded by the Foundation to undergraduate women majoring in Civil Engineering or Construction Management to help with the purchase of computer technology, books and supplies. Kristan Koch and Kim Silvestri are leading the BOND Women’s Professional Group, a forum where women employees meet and work to develop new ideas and programs for additional education, networking and career development.
The group recently surveyed women staff at BOND to gather recommendations on future group priorities. “We were impressed with the survey responses and the desires stated for strengthening connections among women colleagues,” said Kristan Koch, Division Controller at BOND. “These connections will lead to so many positive things such as mentoring opportunities for younger women staff teamed with more experienced women professionals in the group.”
Other topics cited frequently by participants were education, work-life balance and career path guidance. “By building strong relationships within the group, we can more easily share knowledge and career advice,” said Project Executive Kim Silvestri.

As a member of the NAC, Bond joins over 200 distinguished leaders from every segment of the engineering and construction industry. He will contribute ideas and solutions to support the industry today in areas such as technology, project delivery procedures, safety, communications, cost and schedule management effectiveness.

We asked BOND Preconstruction VP Greg Williamson five questions on the changes and opportunities he sees in his frontline work with clients and project team partners. Greg’s recent projects include the phased expansion and renovation of Lawrence General Hospital and the new Joan & Edgar Booth Theatre and Production Center for Boston University.
What changes on the client side are changing preconstruction services?
With the ever-increasing complexity and speed of projects, we are involved earlier than ever to advise on decisions that impact cost, schedule, phasing and material selection. There is much more need for early collaboration and planning that has us working side-by-side with the project architect, the owner and key subcontractors. A recent illustration of the benefit of this collaboration is the Boston University Booth Theatre project where we had important decisions on materials selection, sequencing and site construction to make early on. For example, selecting materials and building the theatre’s dramatic slanted glass exterior required team expertise across disciplines.
Rapid advancement in technology is changing the way we work. When we plan infrastructure layouts and improvements within a hospital campus such as Beth Israel Deaconess, Dana Farber, or Lawrence General Hospital, we need to creatively build for both present technology needs and future expansions and tech innovations. Technology transformation requires us to always look ahead, consider the what-ifs and work with our clients to build in added flexibility for the future.
The complex planning and installation of the glass curtain wall elements at Boston University’s Booth Theatre required the collective expertise of a collaborative team of design, construction, manufacturing and installation professionals. During preconstruction, Greg and the BOND construction management team were engaged early in the design stage to help establish critical budgeting, materials selection and constructability decisions. How is technology helping on the construction side?
Early on, we realized the potential value of investing in new technology – laser scanning, real-time 3D modeling, and virtual design and construction. The early investment BOND made years ago in these digital tools and in developing our in-house expertise, has given us a big advantage in all our preconstruction, planning and estimating. What’s exciting is that we keep pushing the envelope and finding new applications for the technology in areas such as quality control.
Another exciting development everyone loves is using 3D models and virtual reality. Clients can experience exactly how their new space will look and function. If something needs changing or a new idea is suggested, we can adapt quickly and easily. It’s amazing to see how much these tools improve cost control and reduce construction duration.
Speaking of budgeting, how do you and your team help clients to manage the cost of construction?
With funding for institutional projects under extreme pressure these days, budget control is on everyone’s mind. The most critical window for cost management is in preconstruction, when we are developing options, compiling reliable cost data and establishing a clear framework for the budget. Working through all the options early on and seeking creative ways to meet the client’s priorities, allows us to achieve maximum value for the budget.
We like to advise clients not to give up on their aspirations when budgets are tight. We always work to streamline costs through strategic purchasing and project management. Then we create a path back to the budget that allows us to return savings to the client to fund the aspiration at the last responsible moment. This often translates to shifting unspent contingency dollars forward to allow the client’s aspirational idea to be built. Maybe they want to create additional amenity space or consider including additional structural components that will make adding another floor in the future much easier and efficient.
What are some of the changes happening at BOND?
Our growth is allowing BOND to provide more early-stage advising and services. In the past year for example, Bob Stone joined the company as Director of Preconstruction for Healthcare and Life Sciences. Bob and I worked side-by-side for years when we were with another construction management firm and I am glad to be working with him again. His knowledge of healthcare and life sciences gives us an added depth that benefits our clients in so many ways.
Also, our new office provides a highly collaborative environment for both our Building and Civil & Utility Divisions to work together. The combined in-house expertise and technology supports all our clients in tackling complex and sophisticated projects from preconstruction through project delivery.
The Lawrence General Hospital, Santagati Surgical Center features hybrid operating suites allowing a full range of surgical capabilities to be provided within a single procedure and room. What motivates you about the work BOND provides for clients?
I feel tremendous satisfaction and pride in our role, which I see as helping our clients succeed in their organization’s mission. They invest in a building project to improve and expand on that mission. I am proud of the long-term relationships we build together and enjoy our role on delivering best-in-class facilities that will last for generations.
Lawrence General Hospital is a recent example. For generations, the Hospital has provided such a vital service in the community. Lawrence General also happens to be my family’s community hospital. We worked with the administrators and staff on setting priorities, advancing the patient experience and taking a creative approach that will help expand their mission now and in future years when they are ready to build again.
